It was only in the first semester of 10th grade that he decided on his major and began studying art-related courses. Two years later, he received an admission offer from École Supérieure des Arts et Techniques de la Mode (ESMOD), one of the most prestigious institutions in fashion design, renowned as the "Harvard of Fashion."

This seems nothing short of a miracle!

He is Jimmy, a graduate of the Teensen Bilingual Special Program Class of 2026, and the first Teensen student to receive an offer from ESMOD.

In the eyes of Coco, head of the Heru Art Department, Jimmy is a student with clear goals. He can capture emotional details that others overlook and dares to boldly combine colors that "shouldn't go together," creating imaginative and unconventional works.

After talking with Jimmy, you'll discover that behind every seemingly accidental "miracle" lie countless inevitabilities. How could it be summed up by a simple word like "miracle"?

01.

From "Incomprehensible" Business to "Must-Have" Art

Like many families, Jimmy's parents initially planned a more stable path for him—business.

However, faced with tedious mathematical formulas and physical laws, Jimmy felt profoundly helpless: "I just couldn't get it into my head. Sitting there was a complete waste of time."

The turning point came on an ordinary afternoon. Teacher Coco came to the class to give an art sharing session. As Jimmy listened, his previously wandering gaze gradually focused, and he thought to himself, "This is pretty interesting."

After class, he took the initiative to sign up for the art interest club. Once he tried it, he discovered: "It seems... actually quite fun." At that moment, his direction became clear: he wanted to study fashion design.

Jimmy

The seeds of Jimmy's connection with art seemed to have been planted long ago.

In the fourth grade, his mother loved shopping. Every time she tried on clothes, young Jimmy would sit and wait nearby. Getting bored from waiting, he would reach out to touch the hanging garments—this one is soft, that one is stiff, this one is smooth, that one is rough.

His sensitivity to materials quietly sprouted during those moments of waiting and touching.

In the fifth grade, his family traveled to France. He wasn't interested in the exhibits at the Louvre or the famous paintings in museums, spending the whole time looking down at his phone. But the atmosphere of the Parisian streets, the designs in the shop windows, and the outfits of passersby fell into his heart like seeds.

Because he was too young and focused on his phone, he missed the chance to truly appreciate the scenery—this became a small regret. His father later told him, "Then why not just apply to study there later and make up for this regret?"

At the time, these were just casual words, but they were reawakened in the second semester of 10th grade.

When Jimmy told his mother he wanted to study art, she was a bit surprised but ultimately chose to respect his decision: "No matter what you do, you have to like it. Only if you like it will you put your heart and focus into learning it."

What truly reassured his mother was seeing that her son had genuinely "immersed himself" in it. While working on his portfolio, Jimmy would often lock himself in his room for hours. When his mother called him for meals, he wouldn't budge—"I won't come out until I'm done, and I won't eat." That kind of absorbed dedication can't be faked.

Saint-Exupéry once said, "If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to collect wood and assign tasks, but teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea." From his former resistance to business studies that he "couldn't get into his head," to his current obsession with the art world where he "immerses himself," Jimmy shows us just how powerful the "longing for the sea" can be.

02.

Every One of His Works Speaks

Those who know Jimmy well know he is an extremely sensitive, somewhat introverted Pisces. He doesn't like to talk and avoids situations requiring direct conversation whenever possible, even feeling reluctant to order food by speaking with servers at restaurants.

Yet, it is precisely this inwardly exploring personality that grants him the ability to capture emotional details others overlook.

Teacher Coco says, "Jimmy doesn't talk much, but his works speak. Every one of his designs originates from his own life, with bold colors and imaginative structures. It's not something piled up by technique; it's because he truly has something inside."

As a boy not good with words, Jimmy chooses to use clothing to externalize the indescribable emotional fluctuations within him.

He transformed his emotional ups and downs from childhood into abstract lines, planning to twist them by hand into an "emotional skeleton" using wire. This process was exceptionally difficult. The wire was hard and resistant; after a week of slow progress, Jimmy even began to waver.

At the critical moment, Teacher Coco didn't do it for him. Instead, she brought Zoe teacher, and the three of them stayed with him in the adjacent classroom for an entire evening. That night, the teachers simply accompanied him, asked questions, and offered encouragement. With their support, the wire gradually took shape in his hands, and for the first time, he felt: "So I really can do this."

Inspired by artist Karabo Poppy, he pixelated photos from his elementary school days, extracted high-saturation color blocks, and combined them with the bright, unrestrained color palettes of hip-hop culture.

In the end, the rigid wire skeleton supported soft yet explosively colorful fabric. Sleeves and collars were deconstructed and reassembled, presenting a kind of "aesthetic of conflict"—this was not just clothing, but a true portrayal of the "quiet yet explosive" self within him.

If the first work was an inward exploration, the second series, "Information Overload: The Absurd Reconstruction of Community Advertisements," represents his keen and unique capture of the external world.

The inspiration came from the ubiquitous, often-despised "psoriasis" advertisements in the old residential community where he once lived. While others saw only chaotic "unclog drains" and "ID processing" flyers, he felt, "That feeling of information overload is quite interesting."

He photographed and collected these ads, studied their glaring high-contrast color schemes and chaotic layout logic, and artistically reconstructed this "junk information."

He hand-wrote imitations of ad text onto fabric, applied tape and scrap paper, used layering and graffiti to create chaotic yet vibrant textures, and even forcibly spliced elements representing order (like suits) with elements representing disorder (the ads).

This series is full of what many would see as "wrong" color combinations and messy layers, but it is precisely this "chaos" that accurately conveys the anxiety and overload of the information age, demonstrating his courage to transform "ugliness" into "beauty."

This contrast between introversion and explosion was fully displayed during his independent project in the summer of 11th grade.

That summer, he traveled alone to Guangzhou, managing the pattern making and production of his garments, and hiring professional models for a photoshoot. For a boy usually too shy even to order food, this required immense courage.

At the shoot, while the models changed in the dressing room, he waited anxiously outside, his palms sweating. However, the moment the models stepped out wearing the garments he designed, the tension in his eyes was instantly replaced by immense pride and a sense of accomplishment.

It was the first time he truly felt that his passion could materialize into something so beautiful.

The "Miraculous" Interview That Crossed Language Barriers

For the introverted Jimmy, the biggest challenge was the high-difficulty, all-English interview. As a top international institution, ESMOD has strict language requirements, typically demanding an IELTS score of 6.0 or above.

To help him overcome this hurdle, the school arranged intensive one-on-one interview coaching starting from 11th grade. His homeroom teacher and foreign teachers took turns simulating real interview scenarios.

The interview was scheduled for February 24th. Throughout the winter break, Teacher Coco practiced potential questions with him online, and even returned early from her hometown, Harbin, to Nanchang to support him during the exam.

In the days leading up to the interview, Jimmy locked himself in his room daily, repeatedly memorizing English and key points. His computer screen was covered with sticky notes, densely packed with things he was afraid of forgetting.

His mother watched, both concerned and nervous, repeatedly reminding him to ask Teacher Coco for important points and reminders.

On the night of the online interview, nervousness arrived as expected. When the interviewer asked the first question, Jimmy's mind went blank for five or six seconds. He answered haltingly, even forgot his prepared self-introduction due to nerves. He later said, "None of the questions I'd prepared for came up." In those few seconds, he thought he was finished.

After the interview, Jimmy fell into deep anxiety. He worried he had messed up. During the waiting period, he often suffered from insomnia and even dreamed of being rejected. Waking up, his first act every day was to refresh his email, but there was nothing.

Then came the dramatic twist: the school had actually sent the admission letter on the 26th, just two days after the 24th interview. But Gmail had mistakenly flagged it as spam, where it lay for a full 12 days.It wasn't until Teacher Coco couldn't wait any longer and proactively inquired that they learned the good news had arrived long ago.

In his evaluation, the interviewer wrote: "His English isn't very good, but I see his immense potential." Subsequently, the school even sent an email waiving Jimmy's language score requirement, offering him a direct conditional admission.

So how does this "Harvard of Fashion" select its students? In which aspects did Jimmy move the interviewers?

There is only one answer: pure passion.

As the professors value: Are you interested in new things? When you hear new ideas, are you genuinely excited? Do you feel motivated to do something? The sincerity growing from life in Jimmy's portfolio, his courage to break conventions, and his clumsy yet incredibly authentic expression during the interview—all of these precisely prove he is that raw gem worth polishing.

The moment she heard the news, Jimmy's mother was overjoyed and excited: "This kid's not bad, he's really made us proud!" What she wanted to express most was gratitude. "Teacher Coco always cared for him so much, tutoring him every winter and summer break. Without the teacher's diligent efforts and guidance, Jimmy wouldn't have achieved this."

From Teensen to Paris, from business studies he "couldn't get into his head" to the "Harvard of Fashion," it took Jimmy two years.

We believe every child has their own rhythm. Some are suited for business, some for art; some are naturally extroverted, some speak softly.

Education is never about molding children into some standard part. It's about providing soil and sunlight, allowing every seed to grow, at its own pace, into what it was meant to become.

At Teensen, we have witnessed too many such "miracles."

But in truth, every miracle is simply the natural result that occurs after passion is respected, effort is seen, and growth is patiently awaited.

Jimmy

Jimmy's ship has set sail, heading towards the sea he has always longed for.
